The Programs of Public Service Careers
Teacher Assisting
This program is in Public Service Occupations and is open to both adult and high school students. The program is 450 hours and takes approximately 16 weeks to complete if enrolled on a full-time basis. It is separated into three courses for high school students for a total of 3 elective credits. Teacher Assisting will be offered during the day in the spring semester, and students may enroll in the program at any time during this semester. Teacher Assisting consists of two Occupational Completion Points (OCPs).
- OCP A – Substitute Teacher 60 hours
- OCP B – Teacher Aide 390 hours
This program prepares students for employment as substitute teachers and teacher aides. The Teacher Assisting program is designed to support teaching activities for students in classroom settings. It is not a program to provide clerical support to office or administrative personnel. This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the public service industry; planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety and environmental issues.
To earn a Certificate of Completion, a student must successfully complete all competencies and achieve a basic skill requirement of level 10 in Reading, Math and Language on the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
