What is the first step in enrolling in Traviss?

A prospective student would come to Traviss and register. They would then meet with a counselor to determine program requirements and student’s needs.

What does TABE stand for?

Test of Adult Basic Education.

How much does it cost to take the TABE?

$20.00 cash, check, or credit card for adults, free for high school students. All students need a photo I.D.
Testing fees are non-refundable.

How long is the TABE?

The complete process can take up to 3 hours. The test itself has 4 sections: Reading, Math Computation, Applied Math and Language.

When can I take the TABE?

The TABE is offered on the Traviss campus every Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. and every Thursday at 7:15am. Please arrive 15 minutes before test time to register.Testing will only be offered in the mornings during the summer.

Does an entering student have to pass the TABE?

The TABE test is not a pass or fail test. It is used to determine the grade level of a participant in a particular program. If the participant is not at grade level, they may still enter a program but will need remediation before a certificate of program completion can be awarded.

Is TABE remediation offered?

Yes, please call your Traviss Guidance Counselor for additional information.

Does Traviss take other institutions TABE scores?

As long as the TABE test was taken within the last 2 years and the scores are sent directly to Traviss, then the TABE scores are acceptable.

When do I get the results of the TABE?

The test is computer based, results are available upon completion of the test.

What is the total cost of attending Traviss?

Each individual program at Traviss has a breakdown of various costs which includes: tuition, application fee, lab fee, books, materials, parking decal, I.D. badge, uniforms, professional association dues, and certification. Each programs total cost will vary.

Do high school students pay to attend Traviss?

No, high school students are not charged tuition or application fees. However, other program fees do apply.

Does Traviss offer financial aid?

Traviss does offer financial aid for adult students who qualify and have established financial need.

A brochure with a listing of the high school and adult programs is available in Student Services at Traviss. A prospective student is welcome to come in and talk to the counselor or call 499-2700 for information. Tours are available by appointment, appointments must be scheduled one week in advance. What is the length of my program?

The length of programs vary depending upon the number of competency requirements. The catalog and the Traviss brochure defines the program by hours.

What do I receive when I complete a program?

If a student completes the program in good standing and has met all requirements for the program, the student will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Will I earn college credit?

There are programs, for example, Computer Systems Technology, Legal Administrative Specialist, Medical Administrative Specialist, and Administrative Assistant that have articulation agreements with community colleges to determine the level of college credit that may be given.

Is Traviss part of the Polk County School System? Does Traviss follow the same calendar?

Traviss is a Polk County Public School. It does follow the district calendar.

What high school grades does Traviss serve?

Traviss Technical College serves junior and senior high school students.

Can my 15 year old child attend Traviss?

A student must be at least 16 years old to enter the high school program at Traviss.

Can a high school student attend night classes?

No

What is the difference in taking day and night classes?

Traviss offers more programs during the day where the student would attend class 5 days per week, 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The night programs are either 2 nights per week or 4 nights per week depending on the program, Monday-Thursday 5:30pm-9:30pm. Most night programs require a longer period of time to complete.

When do the classes start?

The majority of the programs start in August of each year. However, many classes are open-entry/open-exit allowing students to start throughout the year.

Does Traviss have a dress code?

Yes. Day programs require uniforms and/or safety apparel. The Center also follows the guidelines set by the School Board of Polk County’s Code of Student Conduct.

Is job placement available?

An On-the-Job (OJT) Coordinator, working through Student Services assists current and former students in finding employment. Instructors also assist with placement through business and industry contacts.
