What is the first step in enrolling in Traviss?

In most cases the student must take the TABE test. High school students should refer to the High School Brochure or view our website for additional information.

What does TABE stand for?

Test of Adult Basic Education.

Does an entering student have to take the TABE to enroll?

With few exceptions, Yes.
Exceptions: If you have an A.A. or A.S. degree or higher from an accredited institution, you are not required to take the TABE test. Also, adult students wishing to take Home Health Aid, Nursing Assistant, Nails or Facials Specialty, and Phlebotomy, do not have to take the TABE. However, the TABE is helpful to assist students with advisement.

How much does it cost to take the TABE?

$15.00 cash for adults, free for high school students. All students need a photo I.D.

How long is the TABE?

The complete process is approximately 1.5 hours. The test itself has 4 sections: Reading 25 minute; Mathematics (2 tests) 9 minutes and 25 minutes; and Language 25 minutes.

Where can I find materials to help me study for the TABE?

There is a list of TABE study websites available in Student Services. There is also a TABE study book available in the Traviss book store.

When can I take the TABE?

The TABE is offered on the Traviss campus every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:45 a.m. during the standard school calendar year. Adult students may also test on Tuesdays at 3:45 p.m. However, a counselor will not be available for advisement during this time.

Does an entering student have to pass the TABE?

The TABE test is not a pass or fail test. For adult students, the only programs at Traviss in which the student is advised to successfully TABE before
entering the program are the Health Career programs (with the exception of the Home Health Aid, Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy programs) and the Cosmetology program. A student who is entering any other program is not required to successfully TABE at the time of entry into the program. However the student must have demonstrated success in all 3 sections of the TABE before receiving the certificate of completion for the program. This situation will require that students attend remedial classes. High school students are expected to have minimal TABE scores prior to entrance because TABE remediation is not available for these students through Traviss.

Is TABE remediation offered?

To Adult Students Only. There are 4 methods of remediation:
Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 1:30 PM;
(part time 7:30 AM – 10:00AM and 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM)

Evenings: Monday and Wednesday 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM, and ABE/GED Online in which the student would work to remediate through their individual personal computer.

Can I work on a GED during the day without taking other classes?

No, however, the student can work on GED preparation only through the night program or the GED Online preparation program. High school students have the District Diploma option that includes GED preparation. This is typically a 2 year program. Refer to the High School Brochure or our website for additional information.

Does Traviss take other institutions TABE scores?

Yes, as long as the TABE was taken within the last 2 years and the scores are sent to Traviss directly from the issuing institution.

When do I get the results of the TABE?

The test results are usually available within a few hours of completing the test.

What is the total cost of attending Traviss?

Each individual program at Traviss has a breakdown of various costs which includes: tuition, application fee, lab fee, books, materials, parking decal, I.D. badge, uniforms, professional association dues, certification. Therefore, each program's total cost could be different. Please refer to the Program Brochure or visit our website.

Do high school students pay to attend Traviss?

The cost for a high school student is minimal compared to the cost for an adult student. The cost for a high school student varies for each individual program. High school students are not charged for tuition or application fees. However, other fees do apply. Please see the High School Brochure or visit our website.

Does Traviss offer financial aid?

Yes, for adult students who qualify and have established financial need.

Does Traviss offer loans?

No

What programs do you offer?

Traviss offers a wide range of programs in various subject areas. They are: School of Academic Education, School of Agriscience and Natural Resources, School of Business Technology, School of Health Science Careers, School of Industrial Careers, School of Public Service Careers.

Tell me about Traviss's programs.

A brochure with a listing of the high school and adult programs is available in Student Services at Traviss. A prospective student is welcome to come in and talk to the counselor or call for information.

What is the length of my program?

Each individual program has a predetermined number of total hours required for completion.

What do I receive when I complete a program?

If a student completes the program in good standing and has met all requirements for the program, the student will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Will I earn college credit?

No. Traviss students earn occupational completion points that allow them to earn a certificate of completion for the program they completed in good standing.

Is Traviss part of the Polk County School System? Does Traviss follow the same calendar?

Yes, for both questions.

What high school grades does Traviss serve?

Junior and Senior years of high school.

Can my 15 year old child attend Traviss?

No. The student must be at least 16 years old to enter the high school program at Traviss.

Can a high school student attend night classes?

No

What is the difference in taking day and night classes?

Traviss offers more programs during the day where the student would attend class 5 days per week, 7:55 a.m. until 1:55 p.m. The night programs are either 2 nights per week or 4 nights per week depending on the program. Most night programs require a longer period of time to complete.

When do the classes start?

The majority of the programs start in August of each year.

What are the school hours?

In general,
Day classes: 7:55 a.m. - 1:55 p.m. Monday - Friday
Night classes: Times vary according to program.

Does Traviss have a dress code?

Yes. A copy of the dress code is given to every new student at the new student orientation session.

Does Traviss offer free or reduced lunch?

No

Does Traviss offer day care?

Yes, however, the student must apply for an opening for their child/children. The child must be between the ages of 3 and 5, and potty trained.

Is job placement available?

Yes, through various methods. Traviss has a full time Job Placement Coordinator.
