Mission Statement
Traviss Career Center educates and prepares students for success in a changing workplace.
Message From The Director
As I have mentioned in several previous writings, career and technical education appears to be moving to center stage in the educational arena. In particular, our state legislators and government officials are recognizing the pivotal role career education can play in meeting the needs of Florida’s workforce as well as the forgotten majority. Current data provided by CEPRI (Council for Educational Policy Research and Improvement) states: “Over 60% of the projected job growth in Florida through 2010 will be in occupations requiring postsecondary education and training but not a bachelor’s degree”.
In recent years, state legislators have placed emphasis on appropriate guidance of all students regarding academic and career paths and have worked to increase funding for career and technical education. The current legislative session is focused on career academy high schools. The career academy model is a thematic school-within-a-school design. A career academy is characterized by three basic features:
- a small learning community,
- a college preparatory curriculum with a career theme, and
- partnerships with employers, community, and higher education.
Considering these developments, Traviss Career Center has in place key programs that make it well equipped to move to new heights. Traviss currently provides six dual enrollment/career academies in our local high schools in addition to 35 programs offered on our main campus. I wish to thank our faculty and staff for your dedication – your support and hard work have enabled our school to remain on the cutting edge of innovations in career and technical education. Your efforts have made it possible for Traviss Career Center to take its rightful place in the educational arena.
